In Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Hardy molded a pure, kindhearted image and rather an image brave enough to rebel, to shoulder the responsibility of her action. Her unfortuneness was the tragedy of the society, her character and fate. It vividly revealed the persecution towards people after Industrial revolution made by the conception of capitalism and traditional moral. Following are some of my opinions about the causes to her death.
Her character and parentage was part of the cause
In the author’s ideal world, Tess was the embodiment of beauty and the incarnation of love .She represents all the merits of the villagers in her hometown: beautiful, pure, kind, simple, charitable and tolerant. To love ,she had no egocentric thoughts and didn’t plan to meet her vain wish by marriage .She standed by he dignity and pursue freedom .Hardy made the poor, helpless ,humble country girl as the heroin.Despite she committed adultery and murder, Hardy still claim she was a “pure girl”. This fully showed the author’s sympathy towards Tess. Hardy elaborately modeled the image of Tess and indignantly describes the depression confronted with Tess through her short life.
Tess is a young woman who tends to find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. She is a victim, but she is also, at times, irresponsible. She falls asleep while taking the beehives to market, which ends up killing the family horse, Prince She decides to visit the d’Urbervilles in Trantridge, giving rise to all her future woes, partly out of the guilt and responsibility she feels toward her family. She wants to make good, but in trying to help her family she loses sight of her own safety and her own wants and wishes. She becomes Alec’s victim in the forest. She probably should have known not to put herself in such a situation, but she has few other options. Here, it seems as though she is destined to rely on others, even when they are unreliable.
Tess is also a strong woman throughout the novel. She stands up for herself and refuses to crumble under pressure. She chastises herself for her weakness after her sexual escapade with Alec. If we agree with her claim that this indiscretion is a moment of weakness, we probably also feel that such weakness is not unlike that of most human beings. She is hard on herself for letting herself become a victim. At the burial of her child, Sorrow , she weeps but collects herself and moves on as a stronger woman. Overall, her determined attempts to escape her past primarily reflect her strength.

I’m reading a book named Suet ball, which was written by Maupassant, one of the greatest critical realist writers in the world.
He created hundreds of short stories and six novels during his short
lifetime. As we all know, he is famous for his short stories, especially the story Suet ball which won him great reputation around the world.
Suet ball was based on a true story happened at the war between French and Prussia. This novel tells the sad story of a harlot called suet ball. With several noble French on the carriage, she was on the way leaving her city for her at the point of killing a Prussia soldier.
Though she was looked down by these people, she was selfless to share her food with them. Unfortunately, they were detained by a Prussia officer. The officer didn’t let them go unless suet ball agree to sleep with him for one night. At first, she was determined to refuse his unreasonable request. However, these noble people were so selfish that they instigated her to say yes to him, thoroughly giving up their patriotism. So this kind-hearted girl took their advice, selling her body to get in their freedom in return. To our surprise, when the pitiful girl needed food and drink after the torment, nobody among them gave a hand to her and they even ruthlessly condemned her “shameful” conduct. Suet ball had no choice but to hug herself tightly, sobbing.
There is no doubt that these so-called nobles were selfish and greedy, for they only cared about themselves and wealth. When something or somebody is useless, they will abandon them without hesitation, such as suet ball. On the contrast, suet ball, one of the lower class, behaved like a real noble person. She not only gave food to these ugly people but also sell her body for their freedom. The most important thing was that she refused to sleep with the enemy because she regarded it as a betrayal to her motherland. She kept her conscience all the time while others had lost it in cruel wars. She was born in slush but her heart was pure.
In my opinion, these people were lousy, and the two nuns were disgusting. Since they were the symbol of God, they should treat everyone equally. Nevertheless, when suet ball was in need of help, they just hid themselves and looked on her coldly. Although a few days ago they also took in her tasty food and fragrant wine. They had totally abandoned their duty and opened the door to help others who were in straits.
We can see from the story that everyone is stark-naked in front of wars. Don’t judge one person by his or her appearance or position. Cruel wars will strip all the external stuffs. Those so-called noble people were actually mean. However, suet ball, a harlot, showed her patriotism and remained faithful and unyielding.
I think the author wanted to sing the praises of the courage to resist the enemies and the emotion of patriotism through the character-suet ball. And because of his successful describe, suet ball has become an well-known symbol for her faith and patriotism.
In conclusion, this short story is worth reading nowadays, because we will learn to be brave and perseverance.

Shakspere (wrong spelling) created Hamlet--a man with wisdom and courage .In order to revenge on his uncle for killing his father, he pretented (spelling mistake) to be mad and suffered a series of misery. On the contrary, we can also say that Hamlet is rude and selfish for he did not think twice before his revenge . if (Capitalize If since it is the beginning word of the sentence.) a country has no king, how can a country keep alive (You need a question mark here since it is a question.) So, every thing has two sides, the bright side and adumbral side. Every time we make a decision we have to think twice.
Comment:
Be careful with your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Too many uncessary mistakes.
It is good that you looked at both the dark and bright sides of Hamlet. Thats quite objective and convincing.

little prince
this is a fairytale whose distribution volume is only second to the bible. it’s been translated to versions of many other languages. and i gather there must be something special, something really great about it.
it’s this conviction that drove me to read it at the first beginning. well, with due respect to the author, i failed to see how this fairytale be worthy of our attention, despite the fact that many readers claimed this book to be designed for adults.
anyway, as a well-acknowledged book, it must possess unique feature to maintain it’s position. and it’s reputation and popularity will by no means be destroyed by what an unknown man says. i will talk about the main contents of the book, and the inspiration it renders as usual.
this book mainly tells us the experience of a prince from a tiny pla***, who traveled to many other pla***s and finally came to the earth and met the pilot in a desert. the prince and the pilot became good friends, and the pilot gradually got to know the feeling and experience of his friend. before he came to the earth, little prince had been to other 6 little pla***s where he made acquaintance with some strange people.
the first man he met was a king on a little pla***, yet he claimed to be the king of the space and ridiculously justified his unshakable governance over all. the second person was a man of vanity, who enjoyed ***pliments of any form without considering whether it’s sincere or not. the third person was an alcoholic who tried to f***et the fact that he’s addicted to acohol by drinking like a fish.
the fourth person was an abosolute money-oriented busines**an, who cared nothing but his fortune. next came the lamp-lighter who performed his duty blindly. the last one was a geographer who knew too much about geography to solve a real problem related to it.
these six people each represented one kind of person like us. the author satirized people’s conceit, emptiness, fakeness, innocence and blindness through the tone of a child.
i see eye to eye with the author in that the cause of people’s loneliness can be concluded to the negligence of the bonds that connects them. people are supposed to care about each other, cherish what’s really important for them, and be grateful for the happiness that they’ve gained. we all believe knowledge and experience enable us to see clearly and make right judgements all the time.
but we may sometimes lose the right to speak straighforwardly, think creatively or love courageously resulting from what we’ve experienced. that why in our middle school textbooks, it’s the little kid that breaks the illusion of the emperor by saying ”but mum, he ain’t were anything”.
when i was a child, i was definitely a good boy who went home on time after school and did his homework and never tried anything without mom’s permission. and now i am a grown-up, and still i am a good man, at least, that’s what i heard. sometimes when i was lonely and i began to think about my childhood, then all the happiness and care-free
life came back to me as it were yesterday. kids that once ac***panied me during my childhood now be***e fathers and mothers of their kids and i myself am a child no more. thinking about all these things have made me moody.
there’re changes happening in our lives whether we are happy about it or not.
people told me life is a journey which will never stop once it’s started. what’s left behind are happiness and sorrow, pride and shame, success and regret. there’s good old time to reminisce and there’s sad hours that reminds us of the pain.
your feeling makes them real, and you know you lived.
i want to conclude by saying some positive words that each yestersday used to be today, and each today is the future of yesterday, so ****** the most of today is the best way to cherish your lives. our mortal beings are doomed to die. it’s not sad, instead, death it’s just a process of our lives.
after all, we’ve lived our lives and it’s what we do and how we think that determine who we are.
(when you look at the above passages, don’t regard it as a ***position or an article, because if you do, you will be puzzled at the structure. it’s just a few words that ***e to my mind at the moment and i type them.)
have a nice day!
love and marriage is a constant topic among human, in pride and prejudice, jane austen told a story about five marriages for us in her rational and humorous writing tone, which explains the truth of marriage: love. marriage should be based on love, while it can’t have access to happiness when just based on money or appearance.
and a deeper knowledge is needed when we start our affection . exclude vanity and prejudice, and think about each other’s moral character objectively, and we can know someone better and more exact---- only good moral character deserves real love.
the two pairs lovers in the book, elizabeth and darcy, jane and bingley, mainly based their marriage on love and excellent moral character, though thinking about looks and family background to **all extent. elizabeth and darcy’s love story is most relished especially. during twisting journey from they hated each other to finally fell in love and got married, elizabeth and darcy gradually got to know each other, removed prejudice, and discard meaningless so-called face.
eventually they realized and fell in love with the virtues of each other in readers’ expectation and wishes. furthermore that elizabeth refused darcy’s courtship before accepting, still further show her defiance of marriages without love. on the contrary, charlotte, elizabeth’s friend, who thinks she is not beautiful besides having no money, chose to ***bine with stupid and shallow collins out of economic considerations, and lived a ensured but dull marriage life.
similarly, elizabeth’s sister, lydia, as well as her father’s marriage is unfortunate, for they were confused by the beauty of appearance, while ignoring the moral character. they would be bound to regret for their choice all their life .
Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:
We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.
We remember her pursuit of justice. Its like a companion with the goodness. But still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on one side and must check the badness on the other side.
We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the Gods feet. Though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.
We also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence.
When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.
Actually, she wasnt pretty, and of course, the ordinary appearance didnt make others feel good of her, even her own aunt felt disgusted with it. And some others even thought that she was easy to look down on and to tease, so when Miss Ingram met Jane Eyre, she seemed quite contemptuous, for that she was obviously much more prettier than the plain and ugly governess. But as the little governess had said: Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! This is the idea of equality in Jane Eyres mind. God hadnt given her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. Her idea of equality and self-respect impress us so much and let us feel the power inside her body.
In my mind, though a persons beauty on the face can make others once feel that one is attractive and charming, if his or her mind isnt the same beautiful as the appearance, such as beauty cannot last for, when others find that the beauty which had charmed them was only a falsity, its not true, they will like the person no more. For a long time, only a persons GREat virtue, a noble soul, a beautiful heart can be called as AN EVERLASTING BEAUTY, just as Kahill Gibran has said, that Beauty is a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted. I can feel that how beauty really is, as we are all fleshly men, so we cant distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but fleshly men, so we cant distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.
Her story makes us thinking about life and we learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real beauty .

A TALE OF TWO CITIES
The tale of two cities is a historical story, one of Dickens’ long fictions. The background to the novel is the revolution of France .It portrayed a brutal and bloody story , but it also contained love and friendship.
In the novel, Dickens sarcastically described a typical cruel nobleman—marquis of Evermonde . When he was young he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family .What’s worse , he used his power to imprison Dr Manette , a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes .
In order to hide their crimes. Marquis of Evermonde and his brother threw Doctor Manette into prison for 18 years . During these 18 years,Doctor Manette lost his freedom and suffer a great in spirit .
I felt unthinkable that Marquis of Evermonde and his brother killed people just as easily as they killed chickens. They deprived other people’s freedom as they liked and they thought it was normal and unremarkable. They had never realized that they had done something wrong or something improper. Because their nature was cruel and
evil, like demons. There is an old saying which means: People who commit too many crimes will kill themselves. After all, there is justice in the world. The demons can’t be rampant forever. Because the world will not forgive them. They will pay their lives for their crimes. Let’s see the consequence of the Marquis,’’He lay there like a stone with a knife pushed into his heart.” I think it was just what he ought to gain and it is a real exciting scene.
The Marquis’ death was just the beginning of people’s resistance to the nobleman. Gradually more and more people joined in the revolution. One after another nobleman were sentenced to death and their heads were cut down . However, some innocent people were implicated in the revolution. Charles Darney was one of them He was the nephew of Marquis of Evermonde. To the opposite of his uncle, Darney was a kind and independent young man.
Dickens spoke highly of kindness mercy and love in the novel too. This is the other thone of the novel when Doctor Manette was released from prison. It was his daughter Lucie who took care of him and helped him return to normal. During this time, Dr manette and Lucie knew Charles Darney and Sydeny Carton, the two young man fell in
love with Lucie at the same time . At last, Lucie married Chares Darney .Dr Manette accepted Darney as his son-in-law although he knew that Darney was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison for18 years. This is the love between father and daughter. And Sydeny Carton , the very great man ,loved Lucie deeply. He promised Lucie that he
would do everything for her happiness. He did it truely ,he sacrificed himself instead of Darney who looked the same as him. This is love for lovers . This is the most wonderful thing in the world. It also reminds us that no matter how no matter when there is true love existing. At the end , Lucie, Dr Manette and Darney arrived in England safely.
The tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions. Its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of France. The author made the experience of the fictional charactor Dr Manette as the main clue. The plots are complicated, and they are flexuous and dramatic. The structure is complete and rigorous.
Dickens had dear love and hate. He praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked. The motivation of the novel maybe just warn the English dominators. But I think we can learn something meaningful from the tale of two cities.
"A tale of two cities" is one of Dickens's most important representative works. The novel profoundly exposed the society contradiction before the French Revolution, intensely attacks the aristocratic social class is dissolute and cruel, and sincerely sympathizes with the depressed classes. The novel also described many magnificent scenes like the
revolt people attacked Bastille and so on,which displayed people's great strength. The novel has portrayed many different people. Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution actually , Lucie is beautiful and gentle ,Charles is graceful and noble,Lorry is upright and honest ,Sydney is semblance of indifferent,
innermost feelings of warm, unconventional but also selfless and lofty,Miss Pross is straightforward and loyal,Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister......The complex hatred is hard to solve, the cruel revenge has made more hatreds, loves rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price. As an outstanding writer,
in Dickens's work, the language skill is essential. Each kind of rhetoric technique, like the analogy, the exaggeration, the contrast, the humorous, and the taunt are handled skillfully, and the artistry of the work is also delivered the peak."A tale of two cities" has its difference with the general historical novel, its character and the main
plot are all fictionalizes. With the broad real background of the French Revolution, the author take the fictional character Doctor Manette's experience as the main clue, interweaves the unjust charge, love and revenge three independences but also incident cross-correlation stories together, the plot is criss-crossed,and the clue is complex.
The author use insert narrates, foreshadowing, upholstery and so many techniques, causes the structure integrity and strictness, the plot winding anxious and rich of theatrical nature,it displayed the remarkable artistic skill.the style "A tale of two cities" is solemnity and melancholy, fills indignantion, but lacks the humor of the early works. I have recently read Battle Hymn of Tiger Mother published by The Penguin Press in 2011. This autobiography was written by the Chinese American woman Amy Chua, a tenured professor in Yale Law School. She causes a sensation because her strict but unique parenting which brings excellent performance of her two daughters. This autobiography tells the course of Amy Chua how she raised the two daughters in Chinese parenting way. It is divided into three parts. At the first part, it gives some introductions of the two daughters, the family. And in the second and third parts, the writer tells more details in the process of raising her two different daughters and the difficulties she was confronted in the process, and most importantly the success the daughters achieved in music which brought Amy Chua pride as well as the whole family. To some extent, I don’t like Amy’s parenting in some aspects. In my opinion, she deprived the nature of children and pushed too much pressure on their children, especially on Lulu who was under the shadow of her excellent elder daughter—Sophia. While I was reading the third part in the rebellion part, I couldn’t control my own emotion, I felt what Lulu felt and even hated against her selfish and autocratic mother. I couldn’t understand why Amy didn’t let Lulu get up from sit, for water, not even to go to the bathroom when Lulu just wanted a rest during the long hours’ practice of violin. She made Lulu practice violin all day during the family’s vacation abroad. She spoiled the vacation by letting the other family members waiting the practice. She was unreasonable. But next what I do is to admire her. There is an old Chinese saying “property can never last for three generations”。 But Amy Chua did change it! Her parents came to U.S and suffered a tough life at the very beginning. They taught Amy math and piano in an extreme strict way when she was a kid. Under the influence of her parents, now Amy is frugal and pretty strict with her daughters and herself. They are the valuable points of her. Although she is so extreme on her parenting, she has the advisable ideas that the parents and the parents to be to learn. Firstly, as parents, they couldn’t ignore their children and put all focus on their job. There is no excuse for not concerning their children. Except supervising her daughters, Amy Chua has to give lessons in university, write books and handle the family chores. She is so busy, but she doesn’t ignore the daughters. Secondly, parents should be strict with their children especially when they are kids because kids lack of self-control. They should not indulge their children in internet or sleepovers. Thirdly, parents should master some skills in parenting. As a matter of fact, there are so many Chinese parents who are strict with their children with no avail of success. Success can’t be totally copied, because some parents ignore the skills in parenting. When their children don’t follow their will or perform well enough to satisfy them, they will lose their temper and even beat their children, yes, of course, Amy Chua will be mad but she won’t beat her daughters, in this condition, she will be sober and wait until her daughters perform well enough. She learnt some music knowledge in her children’s class and supervised them patiently. She knew where to correct the mistakes and gave the children extraordinary success. Tiger mother aroused a big heat in parenting and threw such an important issue for us to think about. Battle Hymn of Tiger Mother gives us really some enlightenment. Anyway, that’s a really unique experience in reading this book. Oliver Twist is written by Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers in the England. He was born in a poor family, but later he became famous and rich. The famous novel --A Tale of Two Cities is written by him, too. This novel shows us the cruelty and crime of London. Oliver Twist, the hero, is a poor orphan. He lived in a life filled with taunts. Nobody loved him. With visions of his future, he decided to go to London. He thought a new life was coming, but he was wrong, a group of thieves were waiting for him. The author created a group of bad men. Fagin, an old man, with a horribly ugly face and red hair, was the head of those thieves. He tried to make Oliver be a criminal. Bill Sikes was a cruel and evil man in the group. He had a bad temper. Monks, Oliver’s brother, did bad things to hurt Oliver. He wanted to get the legacies left by his father alone. He paid Fagin to trap Oliver into a life of crime. In fact, they were all afraid of being put into prison and being hanged. They can’t live happily. Nancy, a poor girl, loved a bad man. She had to help Bill Sikes perpetrate, because she loved him. She had to be loyal to the criminal group, because she loved him. Actually, she was kind. She helped Oliver at the risk of her life. If she hadn’t fell in love with Sikes, she would have a happy ending. The author showed these ugly things to us, he described an ugly world. But there are more kind people in the novel. Mr. Brownlow, an old friend of Oliver’s father, took good care of Oliver. Mrs. Maylie, Harry Maylie’s mother, saved Oliver of his life. Miss Rose is the aunt of Oliver, in fact. They all protect Oliver from hurt. Oliver was unlucky to meet so many evil people, but he was luckier to get help from so many kind people. In the end of the novel, all the evil people were punished. Oliver got what he should get. Rose married Harry Maylie and they lived happily. All the kind people have a happy ending. Righteousness can always beat evil. I think this is what the author wants to tell. Although there are many ugly things in the world, we must believe that righteousness can always beat evil. We must store kindness even though we are in ugly situation. One is poor if he doesn’t have kindness. One is rich if he has kindness. So please store your kindness in your mind. What’s more, the novel also tells us to be brave. Oliver was brave enough to overcome all the problems he had met. No matter how difficult the problem is, we can’t give up, we must try our best to solve it. From Oliver Twist , I have learnt a lot .It’s really a good novel. The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if American Puritan society. The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life. The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. The punished woman. Hester Prynne and his husband. Who called himself Roger Chillingworth . He is an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester does not love him at all. Another man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time . It is sinful. Due to this,Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame. In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame. When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will leave her .Hester’s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able”。 But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. What’s worse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins. After Mr. Dimmesdale’s death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil. The two lovers has ever decided to flee to Europe, where they can live with their dauthter Pearl as a family .They feel a sense of release there. However, their plan fails…… When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The two share a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shining brightly. The novel is rich in poetry, symbolism and metaphor. It does not fit easily into a definite pattern, being neither a novel of "manners" in the tradition of Austen, or a straightforward Gothic Romance in the style of Mrs Radcliffe. What Charlotte Bronte did was to create a work which cleverly blends elements of the two styles, and which remains uniquely independent of them at the same time, since it addresses issues which were at the time rather controversial. The novel is written in the first person, and thus magnifies the central character - the reader enters the world of Jane Eyre and is transported through her experiences at first hand. This at once makes the work subjective, especially since we know that Charlottes Brontes own life and experiences were so closely interwoven with the heroine's. As well as this we learn only at the end of the novel that the events are being related to us ten years after the reconciliation with Rochester - thus the narrative is RETROSPECTIVE (looking back). CB is clever in blending the narrative so that at times Jane seems to be speaking as an adult with adult hindsight , while at others she she is "in the middle" of them, as a child or young woman. The indecision which is a central issue in the book, is heightened by this device. We never know, as readers, whether to be entirely trustful of Janes actions and thoughts, because we are never sure wheher she is speaking impulsively or maturely. This intensifies the readers dilemma as to what is "right" and "wrong" in the dramatic relationships which are part of JE's life. Can we believe what the heroine says, or is she deceiving herself? The novel is primarily a love story and a "romance" where wishes come true but only after trials and suffering. The supernatural has its place, as do dreams, portents and prophesies. The heroine begins poor and lonely and ends up rich and loved; the orphan finds a good family to replace the wicked one; all the basic ingredients of classic romantic fairytale are present. The romantic element is present in two forms in Jane Eyre; the "family" aspect is dealt with in the Gateshead, Lowood and Moor House episodes, which involve the exchanging of the wicked Reed family for the benevolent Rivers one; and the Love romance is dealt with in the Thornfield and Ferndean episodes. Both aspects are, of course linked and interwoven throughout the novel. There is also a strong element of realism in the novel, which, married to the romantic aspect, enhances the novel's strength. The sense of place is very strong; we are able to experience both exterior and interior settings with startling clarity throughout the story, in a series of vivid deive passages. The central characters are also realistic and their confrontations and sufferings change them in a believable way. Even the unlikely is made plausible, with a unique blend of high drama and perceptive low comedy (the attack on Mason, for instance) The more fantastic romantic aspects; the coincidences; the secrets; the supernatural occurrences, are balanced by the realism, and this is of course a major strength. The Gothic influence cannot be ignored, although CB has refined the technique considerably from the "authentic" Gothic of the 1790's. In the original genre, the heroine would typically be abducted and threatened with seduction, or worse!. There would be a lover - a respectable, well-bred young man - who would endeavor to rescue the heroine and would succeed after many trial. the seducer would be a brigand "Know that I adore Corsairs!" and he would lock the girl up in a remote castle. There was little freedom for middle class women during the period of the Gothic novel, and this was still the case in the time of CB. Marriage especially was often a bargain, whereby fortunes were secured by using the female as a pawn. A woman's value largely depended therefore on her sexual purity and she was guarded and secured as a result. Men, on the contrary, were potent and free; lovers and mistresses were common. Ironically the women who provided their services were social outcasts as a result. In Jane Eyre we see elements of the Gothic romance, in that Thornfield Hall and Rochester are described very much in the brigand/castle style BUT Jane Eyre is not abducted by R. On the contrary she chooses to go there of her own free will. AND she is clear in her determination to have Rochester as a husband. Neither is there a gentleman rescuer; St John Rivers may look like a Greek God, but he is neither kind nor benevolent; driving Jane back to Ferndean, not rescuing her from it. The trials which the hero is supposed to undergo in a Gothic romance are in fact undergone by the heroine in Jane Eyre. The bandit Rochester is only skin-deep. Underneath the brooding exterior is a sensitive soul, which a WOMAN frees. In this way we see that CB created rather a daring departure from conventional fiction, although there are still many aspects of the novel which remain true to Victorian convention.! oliver twist, one of the most famous works of charles dickens’, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in britain in 18th century. the author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in london. the hero of this novel was oliver twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. he suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. while reading the tragic experiences of the little oliver, i was shocked by his sufferings. i felt for the poor boy, but at the same time i detested the evil fagin and the brutal bill. to my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and oliver lived a happy life in the end. one of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of mrs. maylie and rose and began a new life. he went for walks with them, or rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. he felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? the reason is the nature of goodness. i think it is the most important information implied in the novel by dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. although i don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet i do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. for me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. goodness is to humans what water is to fish. he who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. on the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. people receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself. to my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. they look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. as a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. on the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. in their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. if they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. they are one of the sorts that i really detest. francis bacon said in his essay, ‘goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.’ that is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. therefore, i, a kind person, want to tell those ‘vermin-to-be’ to learn from the kind oliver and regain the nature of goodness.⬒ 英文读后感 ⬒
